This was my first year shooting in Hawaii or even being that far west. I grew up in North Carolina with thinking Hurricane swells were big, that shit doesn't even compare. It was nice to be able to walk down and be able to shoot pretty much whatever pro I wanted and actually have a substantial wave. I was staying with Sunny Garcia so whenever I wasn't working on video stuff or sleeping, I was just wandering around aimlessly just boredom shooting. Wish I could've made it for the back half of winter but Jake was dying so I guess thats a god reason to stay in CA.
CALIFORNIA
I WAS ACTUALLY STOPING TO GET GAS IN SANTA CRUZ AFTER A TRIP TO YOSEMITE WITH MY GIRLFRIEND AND DECIDED TO CHECK THE WAVES
This was also my first year shooting Sandspit, it may be one of the hardest waves I've ever shot. Yeah people will say, "oh but just shoot straight into it from the pier, it looks great!", but see that doesn't make sense. Everyone and their mothers sits on each other with the exact same angle, camera, and lens shooting the same wave and sending every photo to the exact same sites and magazines. So the biggest challenge of shooting that wave is trying to make your work stand out from every fat old guy with an overly nice setup. Besides Sandpit though everywhere else in CA had a historic winter and so it was super fun to work with guys down south and not shoot novelty waves.
